Onboarding Usability Testing
2020
Background
As Dataquest’s user researcher, I was brought in to perform usability testing on an onboarding flow prototype developed during Dataquest’s first-ever design sprint.
In the design sprint, the designer, product manager, and content authors developed a quiz-like prototype that recommended two content options to users.
The primary goal of user testing was to find out whether the prototype made sense to learners and they were able to easily answer the quiz questions. However, we also wanted to learn more about expectations users had for different course types, and expectations for the next step in the onboarding process.
Methods
I conducted two rounds of RAPID prototype testing with 10 users total — four current Dataquest users, and people who had not yet signed up for Dataquest. During the interviews, we also asked users what they would expect to happen next, after the prototype ended. I kept the team engaged in the rounds of testing through debriefing and Slack conversation during the interviews.
Outcomes
After those two rounds, we released the onboarding guide, and carried the insights about expectations into our next project — a new user homepage.
